The Secrets of Recruitment Business Success

The first time I met Romney Rawes, I brought a film crew with me.  It took them an hour to set up all the gear: two HD video cameras, lights, microphones - the works.  I'd caught the 6:20am flight from Edinburgh to London and hoped my lack of sleep wouldn't show.  I'd spent close to £1300 to record this interview, and needed to make this work.  To top it off, I was feeling very nervous about appearing on camera - having very little video experience at the time.

Why did I go to all this trouble?  I was on a mission to discover the secrets of recruitment business success - and I believed Romney had the many of the answers I was looking for.  I wasn't disappointed.

HI Rob, Thanks for your comments – you’re most welcome. I took a peak at your website – looks like you’ve got some exciting things planned. Could be perfect timing for something we’ll be announcing later this week. Watch this space!

This video starts out slow but then gets into some very important issues. Whether one goes public, sells, or just wants to “own and grow”, there are some beneficial points in the second half of the video (you still have to watch the first half to fully appreciate it).

Discussions of adding temp/consulting to perm practices is very good, the comments on being a recruiter but not a “trained business owner” is very valid, and most importantly, the focus on developing a strategic plan is critical if one truly wants to grow one’s business.

You won’t walk away with an ability to formulate many new ideas from this video, but I guess that’s not the point. This is more of a “teaser” that will make you comfortable that Romney knows this business well, in the event one wants to engage him for guidance. I will be contacting him to learn more about the role he plays as an advisor and his cost structure.

Thanks for sharing your key take-aways! Agree 100% that most owners have never been trained on how to run a successful business. That’s a gap in the market that we aim to fill via our upcoming programme, Recruitment Growth Accelerator. You’re welcome to reach out to Romney directly, although please be aware he’s retired now and currently at his home in the South of France, so he may not be able to respond right away. The good news is you’ll be able to access Romney’s knowledge – at a fraction of the cost – via Recruitment Growth Accelerator. Watch this space!

I was very much interested in viewing/listening to this interview. However, the audio was so low, that I could not.

I obviously checked all of my volume controls on my computer. Please let me know if there is something more I could do.

Hi Jeffrey, I’m sorry your can’t hear the audio. It must be your computer. I’ve not heard this issue from anyone else. It certainly comes through loud and clear on my computer (and same goes for the rest of the team here). My suggestion would be to a) try another machine, and b) use earphones for best listening experience. Hope that solves the problem for you. – Mark

The content was very well done & very appropriate in today’s environment but looking at the same two “blokes” for 60 minutes is almost boring!

Gosh Jim – in 10 years as a trainer, nobody’s ever called me “boring” before – at least not to my face 🙂 I’m glad you liked the content, though. That takes some of the sting away. (BTW the video is only 35 min, not 60!) – Mark

I have to disagree with a lot of the comments on here. Romney sounds like he has simply put some good business practices into action. I don’t think he can reveal any ‘secrets’ other than the actual mechanics of measuring the business and getting it ready for sale. Whilst he makes some good points about culture and the challenges of growth the whole video didn’t reveal very much about HIS ‘differentiators’. I think Romney is a good businessman who has has quite a bit of luck along the way. If you happen to come across a rapidly growing recruitment market making money is a given. The reason why so few individuals have achieved his success in recruitment is because the majority of individuals fail. Of the successful ones, there will always be a few people who vastly exceed the others. It’s simply a matter of ratios. Looking forward to your take on things Mark.

      Reply Reply April 4, 2011

HI Gillies, I appreciate you taking the time to submit comments, and I welcome alternative points of view. I’m curious about your comment regarding “luck” – are you saying that if somebody achieves extraordinary success not once, not twice, but dozens of times, that it’s because they were lucky? And if it’s really a simple matter of putting good business practices into action, why don’t more recruitment firm owners become millionaires? I notice that you’re based in Edinburgh too. We should meet up for a coffee sometime! – Mark

It was quite good, both of you were quite interesting and made some

    Rich

    • Mark Whitby

      Reply Reply March 29, 2011

Hi Rich, The target audience is recruiting firm owners / directors who want to build a business (rather than just run a desk). The programme isn’t about how to take your company public, although Romney touches on it briefly. The focus of Module 10 in the series is about “How to Achieve a Successful Exit – If and When You Want To.” The goal is to build a business that continues to operate successfully with or without you! Then you would have the freedom to sell the business (if you wish) or appoint somebody to run the business for you so you can step back from the day to day operations. Or you could stay very much involved in the running of the business, if that’s what you enjoy doing. The point is to put you in the position where you have all these options available to choose from. Hope that makes sense!

      – Mark

  • Yes, and I am quite impressed.

I am very keen on learning what Romney’s “differentiators” are. He mentioned this several times, and they seem to be a big reason for his success throughout his career.

Yes, Differentiation is critical. We can’t give you all Romney’s knowledge in this video – apart from anything else there just isn’t time. Recruitment Growth Accelerator is 12.5 hours of director level training. The Differentiators are covered in Modules 4/5. Stay tuned to find out more, we’ll be making a big announcement very soon.

    Hi guys

    Awesome video.
I’m a recruiter – still call myself one even though I’ve been running Recruitment Systems for ten years, building and selling a recruitment system. I got into recruitment in 1985, built two companies and a branch for Candle in Canberra, Australia. And built that, with no help (interference!) from head office into being the most profitable branch in the Candle empire in three years. Zero to 270 contractors in that time. We started doing perms seriously when we hit the 200 mark.

I’m passionate about recruitment – and about entrepreneurship. Romney: The biggest and best takeaway I got was that I should take some money off the table.

We have 300 clients – recruitment companies – around the world. 65% or so in Australia, quite a few in Asia which is our biggest growth market now. I’m thinking that there might be something we can do together. Not sure what, but anything I can do to raise the quality of the recruitment process I will do. And if I make some money out of it directly that’s fine, but the main driver is to contribute to the industry.

Excellent Interview. I can relate to lot of the Challenges that Romney had mentioned, If we are not Planning Carefully for the Growth, Pretty soon we would have depleted the Cashflow though the P/L might show Profit.

Would be really Curious to Know how he handled that early stage Cashflow Issues other than Floating the Equity of the Company.

    Thanks in Advance

It is interesting to hear the perspective of someone who has ridden the big waves.

Many of us have business and industry experience and have added recruitment industry experience to that – so we’ve successfully ridden out the GFC and other issues over the past 10 years.

What is of interest – should you wish to extend the series – are the dynamics that one needs to be aware of when taking a company to the next level, what goes right and wrong, and most of all the underlying principles that keep you on the road to success.

Easy to listen to Romney and very credibile because of his success. Frustrating because no sense of “how” did he do it – what were some of those key strategic activities and “differentiators” that they created? . Assume that you might be doing that as follow on vidoes? which I look forward to

    • Mark Whitby

    • admin

      Reply Reply March 22, 2011

Hi Jeanette, You’re absolutely right – the “differentiators” were a critical component of Romney’s success. So why didn’t we go into more detail during this interview? Well the main reason is that we had a lot of stuff to cover in a limited time, and we couldn’t do it justice. Romney felt that a superficial explanation wasn’t really going to help anyone. However, I can tell you that “Differentiating Your Business from the Competition” is the topic of Modules 4 and 5 in the Recruitment Growth Accelerator programme. The process involves about 3 hours of webinar content, plus a set of actions/exercises to help you to develop and implement your own set of “differentiators” within your business.

Very good video. Another one that makes you sit back and think!! Having watched it it makes me wonder if i have enough (if any!) real differenters in today’s tough market. It’s easy to get bogged down to thinking we are all doing the same thing but clearly we need to make a difference and be able to express this to our clients. Our business has been going for 1.5 years – our plan has always been to build up a successful business to sell on in 5-8 years. How to i avoid staying small and what needs to be put in place now to achieve this before it’s too late…? Anyway great video and good inspiration…

As a small business owner who has “survived” in this roller coaster US market since 1996, I think my business has plateaued and I’m unsure how to get it over the “hump” and into “thriving”, not just “surviving”, not to mention defining a clear “end game” for myself.
